Bupa Great North Run 2013
Massage brief
Date Sunday 15 September 2013
Venue Charity Village
Coast Road
South Shields
Tyne and Wear
NE34
Background
Help the Hospices is the leading charity supporting hospice care throughout the UK. We want the very best care for everyone facing the end of life.
The Bupa Great North Run is one of the most renowned and popular half marathons in the world and attracts over 54,000 runners each year.
Help the Hospices has a team of 100 people running and fundraising for us as part of the race. There will also be a large number of people running and raising money for local hospices.
We will have a marquee in the Charity Village near the finish line where we will be providing Help the Hospices and local hospices runners with refreshments and sports massages. It is an opportunity for our runners to meet up with friends and family, and for us to congratulate them on their efforts.
Getting to South Shields
The Charity Village is in South Shields. Transport to and from South Shields on race day will be quite busy, so please plan your journey and give yourself plenty of time to get to there.
Metro
Extra Metro trains will be running throughout the day between Newcastle and South Shields. An express service will also operate between South Shields and Haymarket stations. The Charity Village is about a 20 minute walk from South Shields Metro station.
Bus
Special Go North East or Stagecoach buses will be available on the day. Service 553 runs from Newcastle city centre to Bents Park Road, South Shields up until 11am.
Car
The Leas Car Park is just off the Coast Road in South Shields, on the grassed area. There will not be any access to the Leas car parks after 2pm on race day. This is to give a faster exit for all cars using the official car parks. The Coast Road will close at the Redwell Lane / Coast Road junction where the entry & exit point to the Leas car park is. There will also be limited parking available in South Shields centre.
Ferry
The Shields Ferry between North and South Shields will operate extra crossings and will run from 8.45am to 6pm.
If you would like more information about race day travel, please visit http://www.greatrun.org/Events/Information.aspx?ctid=88&id=1
Key Times
The first runners will start arriving at the marquee at approximately 12.15pm so please arrive at around 11.30am to prepare.
10.40am: Race Start
12.15pm: first runners will start arriving
12.30pm – 2.30pm: peak time
2.30pm: final runners arriving
3.30pm (approx): clear up
Runner numbers and length of massage
It is difficult to predict accurately how many runners will come to the marquee and how many will want a massage. However, based on previous years, we think between 80-100 runners will request a massage over the course of the early afternoon. Help the Hospices staff will organise a queuing system for waiting runners.
It is up to you to decide how long the massage should be but at busy times it may be necessary to reduce the length of the massage so that runners are not kept waiting too long.

Expenses
We will be providing runners with hot drinks and snacks in the marquee and you are welcome to have these to keep you going throughout the afternoon. Please do feel free to bring your own food as well. We are happy to give you an optional £10 to cover your expenses for race day.
