Complementary Therapy Volunteer - Wisdom Hospice



Reports to: Day Hospice/Ward Manager and Voluntary Services Manager


Skills & Abilities
• To communicate effectively at all levels
• To work well as part of a team but to take individual decisions when necessary
• To be around people in distress and remain calm
• To recognise and be tolerant of the special needs of some patients

Experience
• Familiarity with hospice philosophy
• Experience of providing complementary/holistic therapies


Knowledge
• A keen interest in contributing and participating in local community services
• An understanding of benefits of therapeutic approach
• Appropriate training/qualification in relevant therapy

Requirements
• Minimum commitment of 1 year
• Not to be actively grieving a loss
• To respect others’ opinions, beliefs and points of view
• To respect and maintain confidentiality
• Commitment to adhere to Medway Community Healthcare/hospice policies and values and the ability to apply awareness of these to all areas of volunteering role
• Satisfactory clearance from Disclosure & Barring Service
• To provide evidence of valid/up to date qualifications, registration/membership with a recognised professional body and up to date indemnity and public liability insurance (minimum £1 million)
• To attend mandatory and any ongoing/developmental courses appropriate to placement responsibilities

• To undertake voluntary work without using it to generate business.

Purpose of volunteering role:
To provide complementary/holistic therapies to ensure a positive and beneficial experience for all patients/families/carers.

Duties & key responsibilities:
• To encourage and support patients to access the therapeutic activities available
• To recognise and be tolerant towards the special needs of some patients who may have limited or no communication, mobility or functionality
• To recognise that some patients and therapies prefer/require little or no dialogue
• To encourage patients who report concerns to therapist to discuss with nursing staff
• To give regular feedback to staff and raise any concerns/queries as they arise
• Any safeguarding concerns to be raised immediately
• To ensure environment/room is prepared before each session with equipment/products available and appropriate for individuals receiving therapy
• To ensure room/area is cleared at the end of the session, equipment/products stored appropriately or sent to be cleaned ( ie towels)
• To ensure supplies are available and to advise staff as/when further stocks are needed
• To participate in audits of services
