Advertising Standard Authority

Hi, how can I find out if I am using the correct wording used on literature and on the web site? I remember back in July 2011 where I attended a CThA meeting, a question was asked "to ask the CThA to ascertain our position, as complementary therapists, with the Advertising Standard Authority", but I have had a look through the meeting notes and cannot find if an answer was obtained.

Any helpful tips would be very much appreciated to help me on my way.

Many thanks, Michelle

Hi Michelle

CAP (the Committee of Advertising Practice) are linked with the ASA and offer a free service to review your marketing material to make sure it complies with the regulations - www.cap.org.uk

Here are some useful links to explain what the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) will and won’t allow:

General advice for all therapies:
http://www.cap.org.uk/Advice-Training-on-the-rules/Advice-Online-Database/Therapies-General.aspx

Advice regarding therapies and acceptable evidence of the efficacy of therapies:
http://www.cap.org.uk/Advice-Training-on-the-rules/Advice-Online-Database/~/media/Files/ASA/Misc/Guidance%20on%20Health%20Therapies%20and%20Evidence%20QA%20(Sept%202011).ashx

And here’s a link demonstrating what could happen if the ASA receives a complaint about your promotional material. It gives a feel for what happens if you make ‘unsubstantiated’ claims:
http://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications/2013/3/Leamington-Hypnotherapy-Clinic/SHP_ADJ_214852.aspx

The ASA has a very rigid approach to the criteria for substantiating the efficacy of any therapy. Many regulatory bodies are working hard to encourage them to have a more enlightened view.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards

Debbie
