Massage Therapy for People Living with Cancer

Friday 22nd Sunday 24th September 2006 or Friday 29th September Sunday 1st October 2006 24 hours contact time, £250 per person Venue: energetics, 14a Broughton St Lane, Edinburgh ***FINAL FEW PLACES REMAINING!!!*** Is massage safe for people who are in treatment for cancer? What about after they have finished treatment? Perhaps you have a relative or friend who has been diagnosed with the disease, perhaps you are considering voluntary work or would like to know how to work with clients with a history of cancer in your practice? This three day course is designed for accredited massage practitioners with some or no previous experience of oncology massage (also suitable for practitioners of Reflexology, Aromatherapy and other forms of bodywork). It provides the information and experience to prepare you to work safely and confidently with clients who have a history of cancer or are currently in treatment for the disease. Our focus will be on working with an open heart and developing the art of being present. The course will include: * The basic physiology of cancer and metastasis * The benefits of massage for those affected by cancer * Adaptations necessary for people undergoing surgery, radiation or chemotherapy or who have a history of cancer * Intake procedures On the final day of the course participants will be supervised in giving a relaxation massage to a person currently in treatment or recovering from cancer. Full course notes and further information are provided in the course booklet. With these being her only (and probably last) European training dates, this is a unique opportunity to work with Gayle Macdonald, an exuberant, highly knowledgeable and inspiring teacher. Gayle has provided massage to cancer patients since 1994 and pioneered the massage therapy programme at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, where the oncology unit specialises in rare forms of cancer. She is author of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer Findhorn Press 1999 (soon to be re-issued). With her colleagues, she has developed an accredited oncology massage training which is recognised throughout the US. To reserve your place, please send £50 deposit to Oenergetics¹ 14a Broughton St Lane Edinburgh EH1 3LY Tel 0131 557 9567 ³Skilled touch is beneficial at nearly every stage of the cancer experience, during hospitalisation, the pre- or post-operative period, in the out-patient clinic, during chemotherapy and radiation, recovery at home, remission or cure and in the end stages of life. Not only are physical needs addressed, but emotional, social and spiritual ones as well. Receiving comforting, attentive bodywork reminds the patient that the body can still be a source of pleasure. As they relax pain, fatigue and nausea diminish. Touch reminds them that they are still lovable and worthwhile. For a moment, this person, who may be disfigured, lonely, or without hope, feels whole again.² From preface to Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People living with Cancer by Gayle Macdonald

Hi Mariette, I have recently finished my ITEC examinations in Holistic Massage. Do you think this course would be suited to my current experience? What qualifictaion would be awarded at the end of the course? What is the last possible date for saving a place on the course? I am based in London so will need to know a bit more about the 3 days - i.e. start time's (so I can book a flight for Friday morning or Thursday evening) I think this would be a great opportunity for me to further my skills. Look forward to your reply. I can be contacted on 07984 673199 if you would prefer. Kind regards Sarah
