Medical effects of Massage on Serotonin levels

Hi all, I’ve had enquiries from a couple of potential clients recently who are on medications for depression and anxiety. They both have concerns that (holistic and clinical) massage can have effects on serotonin levels. Is anyone aware of any research on the effects that massage has, and consequently whether there’s any contraindication risks as listed with massaging clients on medications which increase serotonin levels? Many thanks, Ania

Hi Ania, not sure if you are still interested but these are a few studies on seratonin levels of massage https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00207450590956459 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5467308/ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/7601376_Cortisol_decreases_and_serotonin_increases_following_massage_therapy

Thank you Andy for this, it is good to know that the research has confirmed the increased level of Seratonin, however my main question is could this be considered a contraindication for clients on medications which already increase Seratonin? Is there any danger of “overdosing”?
