GDPR

I am looking at the new data registration rules that become law in May 2018. Does anyone else have a view on what steps need to be changed to accommodate the new rulings. I've read a great deal but it's not as simple as I had hoped to verify if I need to ask specifically clients if i can keep their records of treatment

I cannot recommend strongly enough to you and anyone else with questions about GDPR to call the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office, the body who will be enforcing these regulations) helpline for small businesses,on 0303 123 1113 and select option 4 to speak to an advisor. I had been feeling confused and stressed about all this for months, reading things and finding them too complicated, and not having a clue what I should and shouldn't do, and I made a phone call (you may have to wait 20 mins or more to get through, but it's absolutely worth it) to them yesterday, and talked it all through with someone who was incredibly patient and friendly and calming, and now I'm not worried or stressed at all - wish I'd done it months ago! He said always call them if you're unsure about something, because there is a lot of misinformation floating about, and they are the source that counts. Also, there is a much simpler handout they've produced that you can see here: https://ico.org.uk/media/for-organisations/documents/2258293/eight-practical-steps-for-micro-business-owners.pdf (I still didn't understand everything on it, but he talked me through it). Point 8 is the one everyone should read first, for a burst of relief :)

I hope you found the information on GDPR, there is a lot to it and decisions have to be made but I would point out one area where a number of therapists will fail and that is those that use apps or booking systems. If you are going to feed client details into these ensure they are within the EU,or "third countries". A lot of apps will be based in countries where you are not allowed to transfer data without special provisions, something which will be beyond the means of therapists. I understand there is lots of confusion but remember there are some simple steps and by showing you are trying to conform to the regulation will go a long way in your favour should the worse happen. As a therapist I know how difficult things can be but I also deal with data protection and am a GDPR Practitioner.
