Appreciate the link Katherine. I kind of hoped 6 months was long enough for the government & government bureaucracy to understand what sectors they actually have inside the UK economy and start using correct terminology. I call my self a Deep-Tissue Massage Therapist working in the field of Massage Therapy, within the umbrella terminology of Complementary Therapy. I consider myself a health and well-being professional. I can only presume by "massage parlours" they mean Prostitution Services. Has the CThA made this point to central government?

Thanks for the link Katherine. I'm unsure if I can work in person as I offer EFT/Matrix Reimprinting, Hypnotherapy etc and Energy Healing and also Reflexology As they are all 'hands off' therapies except the reflexology, I'm not sure I come under any of what the government have listed. Like you, Michael, I consider myself a health & well-being professional, in my case specialising in emotional wellbeing; much needed at this time. I really would like CThA to clarify this.

I am so confused too. I consider myself more than a 'massage parlour' and feel deeply insulted that we are classed under this group. Having worked as a therapist all my life and gained several qualifications at all levels of massage, and work as a clinical therapist looking after cancer patients and those with life limiting conditions, I am so angry that we are to close yet again. Osteopaths and Chiropractors can still operate because, I am told, they have PPE, so why are we not able to continue. We deserve recognition for all the hard work, care and support we are offering to all our clients at this awful time. Surely mental health has to be a factor of how we all help - we are life lines to many. I want to know why the government is not realising we are supporting well being at a time that is most needed.

i have not seen any support from ctha. no announcement on their Facebook page and i had to log in to see this forum question. No clarification and no intention to support members by contacting the government for clarification. Im deeply disappointed and feel horribly let down by this professional body.

As a clinical aromatherapist, I also offer deep tissue massage, EFT/NLP and Reiki offering physical and emotional benefits to my clients. As a member of the CTHa , I consider myself a professional providing health care benefits and find it disturbing that Complementary Therapies are not receiving validation and are being associated with "spas" and "massage parlours". Since returning to work after the first lockdown, I have put all recommendations in place, creating a safe environment for myself and clients. All my clients (including some with cancer and one lady who lost her husband to covid) are shocked and surprised that they are unable to receive the huge and many benefits complementary therapies provide at this difficult time. I am fully aware that we are dealing with a pandemic but if we are unable to receive help from professional practitioners, we will have a mental health pandemic. As paid up members, now is the time for the CTHa to support us all and put our case forward to the Government. Sally Knight 2nd Nov

I share all the concerns regarding closure of clinical/deep tissue treatments I have practiced at an osteopathic practice for 24 years, dtm is part of the treatment plan for some patients, therefore in a clinical scenario with infection control plans and correct PPE In place o can understand why we can’t continue. I have had some information that under these circumstances you can still operate within the practice during the next lockdown! However I’ve put calls in to the Ctha (who haven’t replied yet.) to clarify this point. The information given to me came through the Osteopath, who is now trying to locate the article but is on holiday without signal. I do know this isn’t helpful for those working in their own clinic. Totally agree that energy based treatments and other therapies are supportive for both physical and psychological conditions and should come outside the realm of parlours and spas! Trained professionals working alongside medics should be given some support. So come on CTHA, please acknowledge the frustration of your members and show willing to get the ball rolling an even reply to this thread

I am wondering the same with regard to Reflexology. We operate in a Covid safe way. I’ve left a message on CThA’s answerphone.

I’ve just spoken to CThA and they are awaiting an updated list from the Government. They hope to receive info today and will email out a newsletter to members.

I share your thoughts that we have had no guidance whatsoever. I do myofascial release and also work in a practice alongside chiropractors and we all follow the wearing of full PPE and temperature checking and they can still work. I’m sorely tempted carry on working under the same guidelines provided my clients are happy to do so, but daren’t for fear of the consequences. CTha need to step up to the plate.

I also share all your thoughts that we have had no guidance at all and no support from the CThA , which I am deeply disappointed surely they should be corresponding to the Government on all our behalfs. I also am a sports massage therapist and practise Myofascial Release in a clinical setting along side osteopaths with correct PPE in place so cannot understand why we can not practice. I understand that there is a Pandemic at this present time , but surely this is when our patients need us the most. Regards Sharon Reed 3rd nov osteopathic practice Nov 3rd 2020

I too am frustrated and disappointed that my Professional Body has not Yet given any guidance or definite instructions regarding our work position during this Lockdown! I have worked as a Remedial Therapist for 17 years, overlapping skills with Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Physios. Is it any coincidence that Matt Hancock's wife is an Osteopath? It is not in the client's interests to prohibit us from doing our under-acknowledged work at this time, especially as has been said, the effects on mental wellbeing! I too am insulted to be classified under the heading of 'massage parlours', which undermines our professional status and could potentially put us at risk! I am working 12 hour days since the Gov's announcement, to ensure my neediest clients are seen before Thursday. So Mr Sunak, thanks for the 80% financial support, which is much appreciated as I am not allowed to work, but I would rather have been supporting my clients and keeping them from needing the NHS at this time. And, CThA - where are you? I am finding more info on the FHT website than from my own Professional Body!

Having spent the last three days {in between a busy client schedule trying to fit my very needy clients in before this lockdown)and since my last post here, to establish whether I can/can not continue work I am really no further forward. I had a call from CTha to say that I should ring my insurance and local council to see if I am allowed to continue work or not. I have spoken to my insurance company and they have been very helpful in telling me what I can and cannot do. However, having contacted my local council - they have not a clue if we are permitted to work or not and I am waiting for further calls today - which I doubt will happen. So CTha - please help clarify - what are we to do? I do not want to break any rule as I have done everything in my power to work with covid guidelines ensuring my clients health and safety. CTha - please help your members. we need your help and support more than ever now.

I also am confused. I work with a Chiropractor and as we know, he can work but I can't. The confusing thing is another Chiropractor who employs massage therapists within his practice, are allowed to continue to practice! I call myself a therapeutic therapist, I fix people; am not a massage parlour. So why can't I work?

Thanks for this link. Unfortunately, I have to agree with so many other on here that I don't believe CTHA is offering anything more than what we already know. There's definitely a case to be made on our behalf, and I don't believe your'e representing us in the way we can reasonably expect from a professional body. Definitely will be reconsidering my membership when renewal the comes.

I am also very confused by the lockdown rules for massage therapists. I am very disappointed - it is now 4 days after the lockdown was announced and still there has not been any information from the CTHA - not even a holding email. I work as a remedial massage therapist and cannot understand now this close contact differs from that of physios, osteos and chiros who are all allowed to continue working, The term 'massage parlour' is most definitely inappropriate and insulting for those of us who have done significant deep tissue training and know how much our clients benefit from this type of massage therapy.

I have my own sports therapy clinic and treat many injuries sports an work related issues ,using different massage techniques. We should fall under ( other medical or health services ) We has therapists treat an help with a lot of medical conditions . CthA need to sort this out , can we work ??? Massage Parlour is a total insult to all of us !

I too am a sports and remedial therapist and have worked as a cancer and palliative care specialist within the NHS setting. I have heard conflicting reports from different organisations - and a claim that level 4 and 5 sports and remedial therapists are being allowed to work in the same way that chiros and osteopaths can. I do not know where they sourced that info from. I echo the concerns of others that we are lumped under the banner of 'massage parlours' which is both insulting and inaccurate. I actually brought this up in the AoR forums just yesterday. It's about time we fought to have our own banding. My insurance is through CThA brokers. I have two questions: - What is the stance for L4 sports and remedial therapists - are we able to work? - What is the stance for training of therapies at this time? Schools continue but training in close contact services do not? Can only theory be taught at this moment in time?

All of the above comments resonate with me too. I am a member of both CTHA & FHT and have had no guidance except the re-publication of the Gov guidance published for this lockdown, which I was already reading as soon as it was published anyway. This has been unhelpful, confusing and degrading. It has made me feel like I am not worth the effort even though both PA's are supposed to be representing me and my industry. I have my own clinic for Complementary therapy and a number of clients that I am genuinely concerned about during this lockdown with mental and physical issues that were finding solace with their treatments as well as pregnant ladies feeling discomfort in their last trimester. Why can't they be entitled to find relief, just like the clients going to the physio/sports massage clinic 10 metres from my room (that by the way has a completely different set of requirements regarding PPE and time between clients (only 15 mins between clients as an example))? All of us who are professionally trained, else we wouldn't be able to be members of these PA's deserve so much better too.

My insurance company have agreed to cover me if I am treating clients for an ongoing health condition and not doing face massage or Indian head massage.

This is the 2nd lockdown and I haven't received any email/newsleter update from CTha about therapists situation. I know is confusing but at least reassure your members that you are working on it? I am following other PAs which have been very helpful and updating whats going on so I am now seriously going to switch PA

I have not had an email and am not convinced that CThA are doing enough to support us and our clients. FHT give clear advice without having to be a member or log in. Their insurance allows a much wider range of practices to continue working than the CThA does. We know how important our work is to our clients. We've had them all return after the first lockdown with their shoulders fused to their ears from working at home, nevermind what they first came to see us for. We have heard their struggles with mental health issues during lockdown and it is clear that regular massage is a vital part of their wellbring. My membership renewed in March but I will be moving to FHT the next time it is due for renewal. They have done so much more to support, advocate for, and inform their members. Ps. I am NOT a massage parlour!

Ive received an email from CTha re an update that we have to close. I sent an email querying IHC lobbying government to get us recognized as essential workers and received the following reply : Thank you for your email. We are working with all stakeholders in the industry and particularly the Complementary and Natural Health Care Council (CNHC) and the General Council for Massage Therapists (GCMT)to try and bring about change, particularly for those therapists who are recognised within the CNHC register, regulated by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) and responsible to Parliament. If you would like us to verify you for the CNHC Register please let us know and we can send you the necessary forms as it is a free service that CTHA provides for our members. We truly hope to bring you some positive news in the very near future. This email seems to suggest that the lobbying that they are doing is with CHNC registration and not just CTha registration?

Fazlin, thank you for the information. I didn't realise that the CThA could provide that free service for members. I will get in touch with the CThA straight away. My clients are very disappointed that at the moment I cannot treat them. Hopefully, I will have some good news for them soon.

Sophie Pritchard 18th Nov. So very interesting reading all your comments. I too am a Bodyworker, Massage, Sports Massage, Myofascial Release etc mainly work from home in the West Country. It can be lonely working from home (regardless of being in midst of a world Pandemic!) so it has been hugely heartwarming for me to feel I’m not alone. It appears that I am part of an incredibly talented group of professionals, committed to improving other people’s health! We are also committed to investing in our own continued Professional development and our own health so that we may continue to offer good service to others. Truly, a “Complementary” service. In light of this, as I sadly packed up my therapy room on my last day before our latest lockdown, I booked in my monthly Cranial Osteopathy appointment. During my (as per usual, excellent) treatment, we discussed the inconsistencies of the new regulations. She was utterly amazed and confused as to why I couldn’t continue seeing my clients. We can all wear PPE & follow COVID safe regulations! How is it fair that massage therapists associated with Chiros or Osteos are permitted to carry on? Anyway you lot, it’s been reassuring reading all your comments, good to know we’re all in it together, we have our own tribe. I too have received no update or instructions email from CThA either. Every tribe needs a chief!

Hi Sophie, just received another email from CThA, which is very informative, as follows: Thank you for your email. If you are providing a therapy service to support a client who has a physical or mental health condition or injury, and this is clearly indicated in their consultation form, it is the CThA’s understanding that this could be defined as offering a 'health service' under the guidance for the period 5 November – 2 December 2020 (see current restrictions). The Department for Business has further confirmed that: Therapists working alongside statutory regulated health professionals will be able to continue to provide therapy services where the therapy service is part of the overall healthcare plan for patients. Therapists who rent a room in clinics alongside osteopaths, physiotherapists and other statutory regulated health professionals, who refer clients to them for medical reasons, will be able to continue treating these clients. Therapists who receive direct referrals from a statutory regulated health professional will be able to continue providing their therapy service in a private setting (eg. the therapist's home/ the client's home) subject to a Covid-19 Risk Assessment and adherence to the regulations for home treatments. As every therapy business is different, if you would like to seek further clarification from your local health authority about whether it is appropriate for you to continue working at this time, please do so. Please also ensure that if you are continuing to work, you strictly observe the following: the New national restrictions from 5 November the government guidance for close contact services any other relevant government guidance relating to the context where you work Kind Regards
