Oil or Serum?

I've recently had an interesting debate on whether someone needs to use both a serum and oil as well as a moisturiser, the argument being that a serum penetrates the skin deeper than an oil, and an oil deeper than a moisturiser. Can anyone advise just how deep a serum and an oil penetrate the skin?

My understanding is that serum is the best booster for moisture, and a GOOD moisturiser will do a better job than oil, which by the nature of its larger molecules will only put a protective layer on the very top layers of the skin. I use AHAVA products which are brilliant (a serum under my 15%spf day cream, and a good skin replenisher at night) . My local therapy /beauty centre, where I go for massage and occasionally treat myself to a facial uses Natura Bisse.
