Labelling for products sold to the public by aromatherapists
23 August 2005
Has the regulation group, or any other interested party updated aromatherapist members of Embody on the above?
There is considerable legislation on labelling products for re-sale. I believe that if the aromatherapist does a consultation with a client, then no issue arises. However, if the aromatherapist is selling directly to the public then correct labelling is required. The suppliers have to list all ingredients and some essential oil suppliers are beginning to show these fragrance allergens on their labels. The aromatherapy trade council (ATC) sells a summary of this legislation. (www.a-t-c.org.uk). Apparently aromatherapists can label their products saying "It may contain ..." Best before dates are advisable as well.
Another website that covers this subject is http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/guide/cosmeticregs.pdf.
The list of allergens are
Benzyl alcohol, Cinnamic Alcohol, Citral, Eugenol, iso Eugenol, Benzyl Salicylate, Cinnamic Aldehyde, Coumarin, Geraniol, Anisyl Alcohol, Benzyl Cinnamate, Farnesol, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate, Citronellol, d-Limonene.
As far as I know there has been no official communication from Embody to it's members. Please advise me, as an ordinary aromatherapist, whether I am on the right lines, whether aromatherapists need a clear understanding of what is required, and who it is to contact for further information.
Thanks
Pamela Knowles
